Kitchens receive a large amount of wear and tear. Nowadays a thoughtful selection of finishes and materials work wonders to increase the longevity of a kitchen.

Functionality, practicality and modern design aside, kitchens often set the character and style of a home and these can change dramatically over time.

Kitchen Layouts

One of the key design elements when remodeling a kitchen is the layout. This relates to the area of space that leads from the fridge, to the stove, and to the sink. A kitchen island is the most desired kitchen layout. Having an island in your kitchen is a look and feature that is growing in popularity. However, you really need to have the space to make it happen.

There are many kitchen layouts as seen below:

Corridor

The corridor design has cabinets and countertops on both sides of the kitchen. The appearance of the corridor design is similar to a gallery.

L-Shape

The L-shaped design refers to a counter which is L-Shaped. This design is the most common amongst today’s kitchens. All kitchens with corner cabinets will leave you wondering whether to use a Lazy-Susan or not.

U-Shape

The U-shaped design refers to design where the counters and cabinets form a U shape appearance around an island in the middle. Typically done in mansions and massive kitchens.

Single Wall

Everything is designed and fitted along one wall. It is a more popular layout in smaller spaces such as flats and 1 bedroom units. It is often designed with a more contemporary and minimalist style in mind.

Getting a kitchen island is a great idea! But many times, you might try to cram one in a space that is not big enough. Even if you love the idea of a kitchen island and think you have to have one, be careful. Sacrificing the overall space, flow and functionality of the kitchen just to have an island is the wrong way to go about things.

Make sure you have enough space to comfortably fit an island into your kitchen before getting your heart set on having one. Keep that 1-metre rule in mind when designing your kitchen space.

Remember, if you don’t have enough space for an island, a peninsula can often be a great alternative.

Peninsula Kitchen

A peninsula kitchen layout is different as one of the runs of cabinets coming off the kitchen is not against a wall. A peninsula kitchen is has an extra section that is accessible from both sides.

Cabinetry

Particle Board

Particle Board - Particle board is made by wood production waste, it is made by heat pressing wood chips, sawmill shavings, or even sawdust and resin together.

The weight of the wood chips is distributed to make sure the finished board is not heavy. Compression is applied to the sheet to create the tightest bond between the resin and the wood bits.

Advantages

·         Low Cost

·         Light-Weight

·         Perfect for Ready-Made Furniture

Disadvantages

·         Low Strength - Cannot hold Heavy Loads

·         Not as Eco-Friendly as Wood Furniture

·         Expands or Discolors Due to Moisture

medium-density fiberboard (MDF)

MDF - Stands for medium-density fiberboard. It starts as sawdust and shavings, all the little bits and pieces of wood that are created as a by-product of industrial milling. Once dehydrated, those wood fibers are then mixed with resin and wax and formed into panels. High heat and intense pressure, those panels are compressed and become rigid, with a hard shell. In the final stage of manufacturing, machines sand the panels down, giving them a smooth finish before cutting them to fixed dimensions.

Advantages

·   Low Cost

·   Very Smooth

·   Easy to Paint

·   Easy Cutting

·   Stronger than Particle Board

·   Composed of Small Wood Fibers So There is No Wood Grain

Disadvantages

·   MDF is Dense, Making it Heavy

·   Cannot Be Stained

·   Expands and easily damaged with Moisture

Plywood

Plywood - is made up of sheets of wood veneer. The boards are pressed together to create one solid piece.

Plywood grades are affected by many variables including the type of wood, thickness, adhesive, and manufacturing/compaction process.

There are many types of plywood to choose from.

Lower grades are perfect for subflooring.

High grades can be used for cabinets and shelving.

Advantages

·   Very Strong Material

·   Less Prone to Water Damage

·   Stainable and Paintable

·   Holds Screws Well

Disadvantages

·   More Expensive

·   Must Finish Edges Because Layers Show

·   Difficult to Cut

Kitchen renovations in Toronto homes and condos are made different, they now require improvements to accommodate today's lifestyles, involving numerous upgrades needed for expanded cooking areas within the home, as well as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work to support appliances and lighting.

Professional Installation

The most common upgrade is the open concept. Walls are removed and the kitchen becomes a part of living area. Kitchen countertops are mostly solid surface material such as engineered quartz, granite, wood, and stainless steel.

Kitchen islands with stools and large work surface area becomes the social connection between kitchen and living activities.

Kitchen renovations range from replacing cabinet doors and handles, to a full remodel. Your kitchen can even be relocated within your home to improve the functionality of the floorplan. it’s important that both you and your contractor are clear on the existing conditions of your kitchen.

It may be quick and inexpensive to opt for the new cupboard doors and handles but a quick fix for serious structural issues such as sagging cabinetry, rotting laminate shelves or leaky grout work can cause more damage down the line. It is always best to do the job once and do it right.

The little details!

When designing your dream kitchen, there are many items that you should think about. Things like quality of the door hinges, handles and drawer sliders. A good pair of drawer sliders with slow close, can cost up to 60 dollars. Its the small things in a kitchen that make it unique, and practical.

Certain cabinets having glass doors and a definite plus, as is can display your fancy dishes and mugs. Many still like to have crown molding on top of their cabinets, while others still rather a simple filler between that cabinets and the ceiling.

A microwave vent or a vent hood.

A microwave vent is great for accessibility and leaves you not having to allocate valuable space in your kitchen for your microwave and looks it also looks great! But are the fans in the microwave as effective as a hood vent?

Absolutely not, a hood vent is much more powerful than a microwave vent, and definitely gets the job done, it is absolutely crucial for those that cook with strong scents to have a dedicated vent hood for your kitchen! As a microwave vent is good for small meals or a newly couple that do not cook as often, but it will most definitely have you questioning if it is doing anything at all when the real testing happens!

Double or Single Sink? Many like to have double sinks as they separate clean from dirty dishes and utensils. It comes down to preference, but in modern kitchens, a sink is more of something you collect dirty dishes in until you have enough to load the dishwasher.

We have found that, those who actively use a dishwasher would rather have a deeper and larger sink than a double sink. Those without a dishwasher still prefer a double sink, though it takes away from the area of the sink.

Double Sink or Single Sink?

Over the years, we have seen many clients request the installation of a large chandelier in a small kitchen. Typically, larger U shaped Kitchens with large islands in the center, have a nice chandelier hanging over the island and barstools.

But small kitchens should prefer to go with bright white pot lights, as a well lit kitchen will always leave a modern vibe.

POT LIGHTS OR CHANDELIERS?

Kitchen Tile Floor or laminate/hardwood?

New builders are starting to put laminate in the kitchens, but do not be fooled! Commercial Condo builders would rather use a much cheaper short term appearance over providing a kitchen floor that will last 30-40 years.

You should always tile your kitchen, and do not you worry about those bulging T-Molds. We have found that using thin metal T-molds create a seamless connection between your tile and flooring!
